Melt Side Table

Melt Side Table

For Side Table, over 200 plastic objects were collected (bottles, containers, canisters, lighters, etc), which were then melted and sculpted around a junk metal skeleton. Relying on an iteration of the traditional Japanese ikkanbari technique, torn pieces of rice paper artworks and linen added a layer of refinement as they were glued to the structural base. A clear lacquer was used to add a final element of structure to the piece.

Each sculptural object within the MELT collection focuses on the transformative process of recycling materials through an unexpected combination of traditional and experimental techniques. The collection is crafted entirely from plastic and metal waste found on the neglected beaches on the southern shorelines of Vietnam. Adding texture and an airy quality, the pieces are finished with washi paper and linen fabric.
